About yachts in Italy

Italy built much of this fleet and it is where a large part of it changes hands. The yards are here: Benetti at Viareggio, Sanlorenzo at Ameglia and La Spezia, Azimut at Avigliana, west of Turin, the Ferretti Group names along the Adriatic and Riva on Lake Iseo. So are the refit yards, the engineers and the interior specialists a yacht of this kind needs for the rest of her life. A yacht lying in Italy sits inside the European Union, which makes her VAT position the first thing to establish, and she is within a day or two of the Riviera, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and the whole Adriatic coast.

Questions buyers ask

What does it mean for a yacht to be lying in Italy?

It is where she physically is, which decides where she is viewed, surveyed and sea trialled, and it is worth knowing before an offer rather than after one. Italy is inside the European Union, so her VAT position is the first question to settle. It is also where much of this fleet was built and where the refit yards and specialists are, so a yacht lying here is close to the people who know her. Each listing names her location.

Do I need a survey and a sea trial?

On any yacht that has been in the water, yes. A survey establishes the condition of the hull, the machinery and the systems, and a sea trial shows how she actually behaves at operating speed and at anchor. Offers are normally made subject to both, so the findings can be discussed before anything is final. On a yacht in build the equivalent is the yard's own sequence of inspections and the handover trials at the end of it.

What does the VAT status on a listing mean?

VAT paid means European Union value added tax has been settled on the yacht and she can be used privately in EU waters without a further liability arising from that. VAT unpaid means it has not been settled, which suits a buyer who will keep the yacht outside the EU or import her under an arrangement of their own. The difference is a significant part of the asking price, so it is worth establishing before an offer is made. Where the seller has given us the status, it is printed on the listing.

How does buying a yacht through Boatcrowd work?

You tell us which yacht interests you through the enquiry form on her listing. We confirm she is still available at the price shown, collect the documents the seller holds, and arrange a viewing wherever she is lying. From there the usual sequence is an offer subject to survey and sea trial, a deposit held in a client account, the survey and trial themselves, and then closing and registration. The Boatcrowd team coordinates each step and stays with you through it.
