It depends on where you are resident. A foreign-flagged yacht lying in US waters may be offered to a buyer who is not a US resident, but she may not be offered to a US resident until she has been formally imported and the duty paid. Sales tax in the USA is set state by state. Florida charges six per cent on the sale of a boat but caps the state tax due on a single vessel at $18,000, whatever the price, with a small county surtax on top. Other states set their own rates and exemptions, and a yacht kept or registered elsewhere may be treated differently, so take advice before closing.

A survey establishes the condition of the hull, the machinery and the systems, and a sea trial shows how she actually behaves at operating speed and at anchor. Offers are normally made subject to both, so the findings can be discussed before anything is final.
