Spain levies a registration tax, the matriculation tax, of twelve per cent on privately used yachts over eight metres that are registered in Spain or used by a Spanish resident. An owner who is not resident in Spain is not liable for it however long the yacht spends in Spanish waters, and a yacht used exclusively for charter can have it suspended. Palma and Barcelona both have yards that can haul a large yacht for survey, so the inspection, any work it finds and the sea trial can often happen in one place. A yacht lying in Ibiza, on the Costa del Sol or in Valencia may need a short passage to a yard for the out-of-water part of the survey, which is worth planning into the timetable and agreeing with the seller.

VAT paid means European Union value added tax has been settled on the yacht and she can be used privately in EU waters without a further liability arising from that. VAT unpaid means it has not been settled, which suits a buyer who will keep the yacht outside the EU or import her under an arrangement of their own.
