About yachts of 20 to 24 m

Twenty to twenty-four metres is the first size at which permanent crew starts to make sense. Two or three aboard is usual: a captain, a stewardess, and an engineer once the machinery gets serious. The step up buys a full-beam owner's cabin, a tender that launches without clearing the aft deck, and the range to cross to an island group rather than run along a coast. Listings in this band span new stock from series yards and used hulls with a refit behind them.

Questions buyers ask

How many crew does a yacht this size need?

Two or three. A captain and a stewardess cover most of what a yacht of this size needs, with an engineer added once the machinery justifies one or the owner cruises for long stretches. Crew accommodation is usually a twin cabin forward, sometimes with a second berth aft, and it is worth looking at closely: crew who are comfortable stay.

Do I need a survey and a sea trial?

On any yacht that has been in the water, yes. A survey establishes the condition of the hull, the machinery and the systems, and a sea trial shows how she actually behaves at operating speed and at anchor. Offers are normally made subject to both, so the findings can be discussed before anything is final. On a yacht in build the equivalent is the yard's own sequence of inspections and the handover trials at the end of it.

What does the VAT status on a listing mean?

VAT paid means European Union value added tax has been settled on the yacht and she can be used privately in EU waters without a further liability arising from that. VAT unpaid means it has not been settled, which suits a buyer who will keep the yacht outside the EU or import her under an arrangement of their own. The difference is a significant part of the asking price, so it is worth establishing before an offer is made. Where the seller has given us the status, it is printed on the listing.

How does buying a yacht through Boatcrowd work?

You tell us which yacht interests you through the enquiry form on her listing. We confirm she is still available at the price shown, collect the documents the seller holds, and arrange a viewing wherever she is lying. From there the usual sequence is an offer subject to survey and sea trial, a deposit held in a client account, the survey and trial themselves, and then closing and registration. The Boatcrowd team coordinates each step and stays with you through it.
