About yachts of 50 to 70 m
Above fifty metres almost every yacht is a one-off. The hull is steel, the superstructure aluminium, the interior was drawn for the first owner, and the build took three years or more. A crew of twelve to twenty runs her, the range is transatlantic, and the specification runs to helicopter decks and submersible garages. The market at this size is small and slow: a handful change hands each year, and class notation, flag and refit history matter more than the year on her plate.
Questions buyers ask
How many crew does a yacht this size need?
Twelve to twenty. A yacht of this size is run like a small ship: a captain and officers keeping watches, an engineering department, a deck team, a galley brigade and an interior department under a chief stewardess. Crews of this size need managing as well as paying for, and most owners at this level retain a management company to do it.
Can I see the yacht before making an offer?
Yes, and you should. Viewings are arranged where the yacht is lying, which for much of the fleet means the Mediterranean in summer and the Caribbean or Florida in winter, and they have to be fitted around her own movements and any charters she is running. Tell the Boatcrowd team which yachts you want to see and we will put the itinerary together.
What does the VAT status on a listing mean?
VAT paid means European Union value added tax has been settled on the yacht and she can be used privately in EU waters without a further liability arising from that. VAT unpaid means it has not been settled, which suits a buyer who will keep the yacht outside the EU or import her under an arrangement of their own. The difference is a significant part of the asking price, so it is worth establishing before an offer is made. Where the seller has given us the status, it is printed on the listing.
How does buying a yacht through Boatcrowd work?
You tell us which yacht interests you through the enquiry form on her listing. We confirm she is still available at the price shown, collect the documents the seller holds, and arrange a viewing wherever she is lying. From there the usual sequence is an offer subject to survey and sea trial, a deposit held in a client account, the survey and trial themselves, and then closing and registration. The Boatcrowd team coordinates each step and stays with you through it.
