A survey establishes the condition of the hull, the machinery and the systems, and a sea trial shows how she actually behaves at operating speed and at anchor. Offers are normally made subject to both, so the findings can be discussed before anything is final. On a yacht in build the equivalent is the yard's own sequence of inspections and the handover trials at the end of it.

Far more than the year on her plate does. A thorough refit replaces the systems that age fastest, the interior a buyer actually lives with and often the paint, and a yacht that has had one recently can be a better proposition than a newer hull that has not. What matters is the scope: who did it, what was replaced, and whether the work is documented. Every listing here gives the refit year where the seller has recorded it.

VAT paid means European Union value added tax has been settled on the yacht and she can be used privately in EU waters without a further liability arising from that. VAT unpaid means it has not been settled, which suits a buyer who will keep the yacht outside the EU or import her under an arrangement of their own. The difference is a significant part of the asking price, so it is worth establishing before an offer is made. Where the seller has given us the status, it is printed on the listing.
