Shipyard Netherlands est. 1978
Frans Heesen bought a small aluminium boatbuilder in 1978 and turned it into the yard that made fast superyachts respectable. It was the first in the Netherlands to build yacht hulls in aluminium — harder to work than steel, and considerably lighter — and it committed to that early, adding steel construction only in 1992.
The Fast Displacement Hull Form, developed with Van Oossanen Naval Architects, is the yard's real contribution to the field. It behaves like a displacement hull at low speed and keeps going well past the point where a displacement hull should stop, without the fuel bill a planing hull would demand. Galactica Star, the 65m that introduced it, was reported around 30% more efficient than a conventional hull of the same size. The principle has since spread well beyond Oss.
Frans Heesen retired in 2012 and the yard has spent the years since pushing hybrid propulsion alongside the hull work, which is the same argument continued by other means: go further, burn less.
Heesen suits a charter where the destinations are spread out and nobody wants to spend a day at 11 knots getting between them. Quiet at speed, and unusually economical for the pace. Our fleet runs 28m to 57m.
