Local knowledgeThe Bay of Islands' 144 islands and the Hauraki Gulf shine through the southern summer, with big tides, big scenery and world-class sailing culture.
For the peak December to February summer, six to eight months’ lead time is advisable, with demand peaking over Christmas-New Year and the Auckland Anniversary Regatta in late January. Shoulder-season charters in November or March offer warm conditions with broader vessel selection and can often be arranged four to five months ahead at softer rates.
The Advance Provisioning Allowance is typically 30 to 35% of the base charter fee and covers fuel, food, beverages, marina fees, and any arranged excursions. Auckland’s provisioning is exceptional, the Viaduct fish market, Waiheke’s boutique vineyards, and the city’s specialist yacht chandleries are all within minutes of the marinas. Any unspent APA is refunded at the end of the voyage.
Yes, the northbound coastal passage from Auckland to the Bay of Islands covers roughly 125 nautical miles, a comfortable one-to-two-day cruise depending on the yacht’s speed and your preferred stops along the Northland coast. En route, the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve offers world-class diving. Your Boatcrowd broker designs the routing with overnight anchorages and provisioning points.

Auckland’s charter fleet draws from over 20 yachts in New Zealand waters: 68′-98′ motor yachts that explore Waiheke Island’s vineyards and Great Barrier Island’s remote bays, 100′+ superyachts with panoramic salons for Hauraki Gulf entertaining, and 55′+ catamarans suited to the sheltered channels between Rangitoto and Motutapu.
December to March is peak season, long, sun-filled days of 23 to 28°C, the Hauraki Gulf shimmering with racing yachts, and the Auckland Anniversary Regatta in late January drawing hundreds of vessels. November and April offer mild conditions and quieter anchorages. Daily rates start from approximately $4,500/day, climbing to $9,000+/day on superyachts, plus 15% New Zealand GST and 30 to 35% APA for fuel, provisions, and marina fees.
