Holidays and school breaks that suit these waters
We recommend booking six to twelve months ahead for peak season (October to November) and cherry blossom season (late March to April), as Japan’s charter fleet is still relatively small and the most sought-after yachts fill quickly. Shoulder-season and summer charters can often be confirmed with three to six months’ notice, giving you more flexibility on vessel choice and itinerary.
The base daily rate covers the yacht, professional crew, insurance and onboard amenities. On top of the charter fee, expect Japanese consumption tax (10%) and a 30% APA, which your crew draws on for fuel, provisioning, port fees and any off-yacht excursions. Crew gratuity of 10 to 15% is customary but not mandatory.
The standard APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) is 30% of the base charter fee, payable before departure. Your captain manages this fund throughout the voyage, and any unspent balance is refunded at the end of the charter. Japan’s provisioning costs, particularly for premium seafood and wagyu, can be higher than the Caribbean, but fuel and port fees remain competitive, and your captain will provide a full accounting at disembarkation.
Most Western passport holders receive a 90-day visa exemption on arrival, which is more than sufficient for a charter holiday. Your Boatcrowd charter specialist can advise on any specific entry requirements based on your nationality, passport validity and travel plans.
Yacht charter Japan opens a cruising ground unlike anything in the Mediterranean or Caribbean, a 6,800-island archipelago where ancient shrines rise from forested headlands, Michelin-starred chefs source tuna and uni from the morning’s catch, and volcanic hot springs steam at the water’s edge. Boatcrowd’s Japan fleet numbers 10 yachts, from agile motor yachts in the 68’-98’ range to superyachts exceeding 100’, all professionally crewed and available for multi-day voyages across Tokyo Bay, the Seto Inland Sea and the tropical Kerama Islands. Peak season runs from October through November, when typhoons have passed and autumn foliage blazes across the coastal hills; spring’s cherry blossom weeks (late March to mid-April) are equally spectacular from the water. Charters start from $5,400 per day plus Japanese consumption tax (currently 10%) and a 30% APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) to cover fuel, food, dockage and incidentals. What makes Japan singular is the contrast: one morning you’re cruising beneath the neon skyline of Yokohama, the next you’re anchored off a silent volcanic island where sea turtles outnumber people.
