Holidays and school breaks that suit these waters
For peak-season departures (December to April), booking 6 to 12 months ahead secures the widest choice of yachts and crew. The USVI’s proximity to the mainland US drives strong demand over the holiday period. Shoulder-season charters in November or May can often be confirmed with 2 to 3 months’ notice, especially when vessels reposition between the Caribbean and the Eastern Seaboard.
The base charter fee covers the yacht, professional crew, and all onboard amenities, water toys, snorkelling gear, tenders, paddleboards, and linens. Provisioning (food, drinks, fuel, and mooring fees) is managed through the APA, typically 25 to 35% of the charter fee. Applicable USVI excise tax is added to the base rate, and crew gratuity of 10 to 20% is customary and paid separately at the end of the voyage.
The USVI and BVI sit side by side, St Thomas to Tortola is roughly 12 nautical miles, an easy morning cruise. Customs clearance is efficient for crewed charter yachts, and a standard seven-day itinerary from St Thomas can include St John, Jost Van Dyke, The Baths on Virgin Gorda, and a return through Norman Island, blending both territories seamlessly.
A luxury catamaran of 55′-65′ is ideal for couples or small families seeking stability, open deck space, and shallow-draft access to bays like Honeymoon Beach on St John. For larger groups of 8 to 12 guests, a motor yacht of 80′-98′ provides more interior volume, faster passages between islands, and a dedicated crew galley for onboard entertaining.
Yacht charter USVI opens the door to the United States Virgin Islands, three sun-drenched islands where Caribbean colour meets American convenience, and no passport is required for US citizens. From Charlotte Amalie’s duty-free waterfront on St Thomas to the pristine national-park beaches of St John and the Danish-colonial sugar-mill ruins of St Croix, the USVI offers a striking range of experiences within a compact cruising radius. The charter fleet spans motor yachts of 68′-98′, superyachts above 100′, and luxury catamarans from 55′, with many vessels based at Yacht Haven Grande or the American Yacht Harbour on St Thomas. Peak season runs December through April, when trade winds keep afternoon highs around 28 °C and the water glows a luminous aquamarine; November and May offer shoulder-season value with warmer seas and fewer visiting yachts.
Daily rates start from $5,600 on a catamaran or mid-size motor yacht and from $10,200 on latest-model vessels above 78′, plus applicable USVI excise tax and APA of typically 25 to 35%. The USVI’s defining advantage is accessibility, direct flights from major US cities land on St Thomas daily, making it one of the easiest Caribbean charter destinations to reach, with the neighbouring BVI just a short sail away for those wanting a cross-territory itinerary.
