Holidays and school breaks that suit these waters
For peak-season departures (December to April), booking 6 to 12 months ahead is recommended, Barbados has a smaller charter fleet than some Caribbean hubs, so vessel choice narrows quickly during the holidays. Shoulder-season charters in November or May can often be confirmed with 2 to 3 months’ notice, especially when yachts reposition between the Windward Islands and the wider Caribbean.
Barbados sits roughly 100 nautical miles east of the Grenadines, an overnight crossing on a large motor yacht. A 10 to 14-day charter starting or ending in Barbados can cover the Platinum Coast, then cross to the Grenadines for island-hopping through Bequia, Mustique, and the Tobago Cays, creating one of the Caribbean’s most varied voyages.
The base charter fee covers the yacht, professional crew, and all onboard amenities, water toys, snorkelling gear, tenders, and linens. Food, beverages, fuel, and port fees are managed through the APA (typically 25 to 35% of the charter fee). Crew gratuity of 10 to 20% is customary and settled separately at the end of the charter.
The west coast’s calm, reef-protected waters are ideal for young swimmers and snorkellers, Mullins Bay and Paynes Bay are particularly gentle. The island also offers engaging shore excursions for families, from the Barbados Wildlife Reserve’s free-roaming green monkeys to the Harrison’s Cave underground tram tour. Catamarans provide stable, spacious platforms well-suited to families with small children.

Bridgetown’s Careenage harbour, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still echoes with the island’s sugar-and-rum trading past, while the Platinum Coast stretching north from Holetown delivers some of the Caribbean’s most refined waterfront dining and villa life. The charter fleet visiting Barbados numbers around 15 vessels, including motor yachts of 68′-98′, superyachts above 100′, and luxury catamarans from 55′, primarily anchoring off Bridgetown’s deep-water harbour or the Platinum Coast’s sheltered bays. Peak season runs December through April, with trade winds of 12 to 18 knots and daytime highs around 29 °C; November and May bring shoulder-season value with warmer seas and lighter visitor traffic.
Daily rates start from $5,600 on a luxury catamaran and from $10,200 on latest-model yachts above 89′, plus APA of typically 25 to 35%. Barbados’s defining charm is its maturity as a destination, world-class cricket, centuries-old rum distilleries, and a Friday-night fish-fry at Oistins that brings locals and visitors together over grilled mahi-mahi and Banks beer under the stars.
