Barbados Itineraries: Day Charters and Multi-Day Routes
Barbados is a single-island destination – there are no neighbouring islands within easy reach – so itineraries here focus on coastal exploration rather than island-hopping. The Platinum Coast’s calm waters and closely spaced anchorages make it ideal for catamaran cruising, with daily passages of just 3–10 nautical miles between bays. Below are three distinctive day-charter routes and two multi-day itineraries that cover different ground and can be combined into a comprehensive 7-day coastal voyage.
Day Charters
Platinum Coast Turtle Cruise
The signature Barbados day charter. Depart from your west-coast mooring and cruise to Paynes Bay for a morning swim with green and hawksbill turtles in crystal-clear water – the turtles feed on seagrass within metres of your catamaran and are completely at ease with swimmers. Continue north to Mullins Beach for a beach-bar lunch (grilled fish, rum punch, toes in the sand), then cruise to Sandy Lane Bay for an afternoon snorkel over the scattered reef. Return south in the late afternoon, pausing for a sundowner at anchor off Holetown with the Platinum Coast turning gold in the evening light.
Carlisle Bay Marine Park Snorkel
A half-day or full-day charter exploring Barbados’s premier marine park. Anchor in Carlisle Bay in 4–8 metres over sand and snorkel the shipwrecks – the Bajan Queen at 12 metres, the Berwind at 7 metres and the shallow Ce-Trek, all teeming with tropical fish, turtles and coral formations. Between dives, explore the historic Careenage and Bridgetown’s waterfront – duty-free shopping, the UNESCO-listed Garrison area and a cold Banks beer at the Boatyard beach bar. For a full-day charter, combine with a cruise north to Paynes Bay for an afternoon turtle swim before returning to your mooring.
North Coast Adventure to Animal Flower Cave
A full-day charter for guests seeking adventure beyond the Platinum Coast. Cruise north from Speightstown along the quieter north-west coast, passing the cliffs of St Lucy parish and the rugged shoreline that hints at the Atlantic drama to come. Anchor off the northern tip (conditions permitting – your captain will assess the swell) and tender ashore for a visit to Animal Flower Cave – a sea cave with natural rock pools, sea anemones and Atlantic views that feel like the edge of the world. Lunch at the clifftop restaurant, then cruise south along the Platinum Coast, stopping at Mullins Beach or Gibbes for a late-afternoon swim. A more adventurous charter that showcases Barbados’s wilder northern character.
Multi-Day Itineraries
3-Day Route: Platinum Coast Discovery
This 3-day itinerary explores the full length of the sheltered west coast, covering approximately 20 nautical miles at a leisurely pace – ideal for first-time visitors and families.
Day 1: Carlisle Bay and Bridgetown
Begin at Carlisle Bay, anchoring in the marine park in 4–8 metres over sand. Spend the morning snorkelling the shipwrecks – the Bajan Queen, Berwind and Ce-Trek – swimming alongside turtles and schools of tropical fish in visibility that frequently exceeds 20 metres. After lunch on the aft deck, tender to the historic Careenage and explore Bridgetown’s UNESCO-listed Garrison area, the colourful Cheapside Market and the waterfront shops. Return to the catamaran for a sunset cocktail in the bay, with the lights of Bridgetown reflected in the calm water. Overnight at anchor in Carlisle Bay.
Day 2: Paynes Bay, Holetown and Sandy Lane
Cruise north along the Platinum Coast to Paynes Bay (approximately 5 nautical miles, 30 minutes). Slip into the water for a morning turtle swim – green and hawksbill turtles feeding in the seagrass, undisturbed by your presence. Continue north to Holetown for a late-morning stroll through Limegrove Lifestyle Centre and lunch at Tides – refined Caribbean cuisine in a beachfront coral-stone setting. In the afternoon, anchor off Sandy Lane Bay and snorkel the scattered reef, or simply relax on the catamaran’s spacious foredeck. Dinner at The Cliff (book in advance) or Cin Cin by the Sea, both a short dinghy ride from the anchorage. Overnight off Holetown.
Day 3: Mullins Beach, Speightstown and Return
Cruise north to Mullins Beach (4 nautical miles) for a relaxed morning on the sand – beach bar, sun loungers and excellent snorkelling on the reef. Continue to Speightstown for a late-morning exploration of this historic port town: the Arlington House Museum, colourful colonial architecture and waterfront fish restaurants. After lunch, cruise south along the full length of the Platinum Coast, pausing at any bay that catches your eye. Arrive at your departure point by late afternoon, with a final swim and sundowner at anchor.
4-Day Route: Deep Barbados – West Coast, North Coast and Cultural Immersion
This 4-day itinerary goes beyond the Platinum Coast to include the wilder north, the rum heritage and the island’s cultural highlights – covering approximately 40 nautical miles.
Day 1: Carlisle Bay to Paynes Bay (Marine Park and Turtles)
Begin at Carlisle Bay for a morning snorkel on the shipwrecks, then cruise north to Paynes Bay for an afternoon turtle swim. This opening day covers the two marquee marine experiences – wrecks and turtles – at a relaxed pace, with lunch on the aft deck between anchorages. Overnight off Paynes Bay.
Day 2: Holetown to Speightstown (Platinum Coast Immersion)
Cruise north through the heart of the Platinum Coast. Morning at Sandy Lane Bay for snorkelling, then continue to Holetown for a provisioning stop and lunch ashore. In the afternoon, cruise to Speightstown and explore the town’s colonial heritage. Arrange a shore excursion to Mount Gay Rum Distillery in St Lucy parish (30 minutes by taxi) for a guided tour and tasting of the world’s oldest commercial rum. Return to the catamaran for dinner on the aft deck in Speightstown’s quiet harbour. Overnight off Speightstown.
Day 3: North Coast and Cultural Excursion
The most adventurous day. Cruise north along the coast to the island’s tip (conditions permitting) for a shore excursion to Animal Flower Cave. Alternatively – or in addition – arrange a half-day overland tour to Harrison’s Cave and the Atlantic coast at Bathsheba (your captain anchors at Speightstown while you explore by taxi). The Soup Bowl surf break, the dramatic rock formations at Bathsheba and the crystallised cave system offer a completely different perspective on the island. Return to the catamaran for an afternoon swim at Mullins Beach. Overnight off Mullins or Speightstown.
Day 4: South Coast Return via Holetown
A leisurely final day cruising south along the Platinum Coast. Stop at any bay you missed – Gibbes, Fitts Village, Prospect – for a morning swim. Arrive at Carlisle Bay by early afternoon for a final snorkel on the wrecks. If your charter ends on a Friday, time your evening for the Oistins Fish Fry – a short taxi ride south from Carlisle Bay and the most authentic weekly food event on the island: grilled marlin, lobster, macaroni pie, Banks beer and live music until late.
Guests seeking a comprehensive 7-day Barbados experience can combine the 3-day Platinum Coast discovery with the 4-day deep-Barbados route, covering every major anchorage, both marine parks, the rum heritage, the cave system and the Atlantic coast without repeating a single stop. For a grander Eastern Caribbean itinerary, add the 100-nautical-mile passage south-west to St Vincent and the Grenadines, extending the voyage to 10–14 days of the most varied cruising in the region.
