Shipyard United Kingdom est. 1969
Robert Braithwaite borrowed £5,000, bought the moulds for a 17-foot sportsboat, and started building in 1969 as Poole Power Boats. He towed the first two finished hulls to the London Boat Show in 1971 and sold them off the stand. His younger brother John joined and stayed fifty years, retiring as Design Director in 2018. The company took the Sunseeker name in 1985.
The boat that set the direction was the Offshore 28, drawn with Don Shead — the first cruiser of its kind built in Europe, aimed squarely at the Mediterranean but engineered for home waters. That is the whole British argument in one hull: a deep vee, because the Channel is rougher than the Tyrrhenian Sea.
That sea-keeping is the real inheritance and it is worth more on charter than any styling point. A Sunseeker will hold a comfortable cruising speed in conditions that would force an equivalent Mediterranean planing hull to back off. The yard has also never left Poole, which is unusual in an industry that chases cheaper labour.
The most recognisable British name on the water and the second-best represented yard in our fleet, running 15m to 40m. Particularly strong for the Balearics, the Solent and the Caribbean, and the safer pick if your week includes open water.
