About displacement yachts in the USA
Fort Lauderdale, which calls itself the yachting capital of the world, holds its international boat show each year in late October, and bills it as the largest in-water boat show in the world. A displacement yacht pushes through the water rather than climbing on top of it, and that single fact shapes everything else about her. Lengths among the displacement yachts listed in the USA run from 24 m to 72 m. The ports they are lying at include Fort Lauderdale, Miami and West Palm Beach. Six of them are in build.

Buying in the USA
- VAT and tax
- The United States has no VAT; sales and use tax is set by each state. Yachts imported for use in the US are dutiable under tariff heading 8903, at a general rate of 1.5% for yachts over 24 metres, and an additional tariff that varies by country of origin has applied to most imports since 24 July 2026, so the position is best checked at import. Florida caps the sales tax on a boat sale at $18,000 as at September 2026. Read our VAT and tax guide
- Flag and registration
- US Coast Guard documentation is open to vessels of at least five net tons wholly owned by US citizens, so foreign owners usually keep a foreign flag. Under the Passenger Vessel Services Act a foreign vessel may not carry passengers between US ports, which limits charter by foreign yachts. Yachts from countries with reciprocal arrangements can obtain a CBP cruising licence for up to one year, and Florida does not charge use tax on foreign-flagged yachts holding one.
- Berths
- South Florida has the largest concentration of superyacht berths: Bahia Mar Yachting Center in Fort Lauderdale has over 250 slips for vessels up to 300 feet, Safe Harbor Rybovich in West Palm Beach takes yachts up to about 100 metres, and Yacht Haven Grande Miami at Island Gardens has 50 superyacht berths up to 550 feet. In summer, Newport Shipyard in Rhode Island takes yachts up to 350 feet.
- Refit and survey
- Florida is the main US refit centre. Safe Harbor Rybovich in West Palm Beach combines superyacht berths with a shipyard offering hoists up to 660 tons, and Lauderdale Marine Center on Fort Lauderdale's New River is described as the largest yacht repair facility in the country by the number of large vessels it can haul. Florida caps the sales tax on each boat repair at $60,000 as at September 2026.
- When to view
- The fleet generally spends winter in Florida and the Caribbean and summer in New England. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show runs from 28 October to 1 November 2026 across seven venues, including Bahia Mar and the Superyacht Village at Pier Sixty-Six, and the Palm Beach International Boat Show follows from 17 to 21 March 2027 on Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach.

How does buying a yacht through Boatcrowd work?

What does the VAT status on a listing mean?
VAT paid means European Union value added tax has been settled on the yacht and she can be used privately in EU waters without a further liability arising from that. VAT unpaid means it has not been settled, which suits a buyer who will keep the yacht outside the EU or import her under an arrangement of their own. The difference is a significant part of the asking price, so it is worth establishing before an offer is made. Where the seller has given us the status, it is printed on the listing.
Why do some listings say Price on Request?
Because the seller has chosen not to publish a figure. It is common at the top of the market and on yachts that have only just come available, and it says nothing about where the price sits in either direction. Do I need a survey and a sea trial?
On any yacht that has been in the water, yes. A survey establishes the condition of the hull, the machinery and the systems, and a sea trial shows how she actually behaves at operating speed and at anchor. Offers are normally made subject to both, so the findings can be discussed before anything is final. On a yacht in build the equivalent is the yard's own sequence of inspections and the handover trials at the end of it.
