Lino Siclari founded Aicon in Milan in 1993 making marine furniture, moved the company to Giammoro in Sicily in 1996, and only started building yachts in 1999. Sicily is an odd place to build yachts — the industry clusters around Tuscany and Liguria — and the boats came out looking it, styled with more flourish than most of their mainland competitors.
The yard closed in 2012, caught by the financial crisis and the Italian downturn that followed, and the name was bought by American investors in 2018. For a charterer the closure is not a problem but an opportunity: these are well-built composite yachts in the size band that does most of the work in the Mediterranean, without the premium a current model carries.
The practical consequence of a yard closing is that nothing about the boat changes but the price does. An Aicon gives you the same length, the same specification and the same Mediterranean-suited layout as a current hull, without the premium attached to a name still in production.
