Local knowledgeSteady 15 to 20 knot trade winds and line-of-sight island hops make the BVI the world's most forgiving blue-water playground.
Holidays and school breaks that suit these waters
For December to April departures, booking 6 to 12 months ahead is recommended, Virgin Gorda’s anchorages are intimate and moorings at North Sound fill quickly during high season. Shoulder-season charters in November or May can often be arranged with 8 to 12 weeks’ notice, particularly when yachts are repositioning between the BVI and the wider Caribbean.
Most charter yachts carry paddleboards, kayaks, snorkelling gear, and a floating swim platform as standard. Larger motor yachts and superyachts often add jet skis, SeaBobs, inflatable slides, and diving compressors. The reefs around Virgin Gorda offer superb snorkelling, and your charter specialist can arrange guided dives or deep-sea fishing excursions on request.
Virgin Gorda is a wonderful family charter destination. The sheltered waters of North Sound provide calm conditions for young swimmers and paddleboarders, and the shallow tidal pools at The Baths are endlessly fascinating for children of all ages. Short sailing distances between anchorages, typically under 6 nautical miles, keep time on passage comfortably brief, and the crew can tailor meals and activities to suit younger guests.
High-season rates (December to April) are typically 15 to 25% above low-season levels. Low season (June to October) brings warmer water and emptier anchorages but a higher chance of afternoon squalls. The shoulder months of November and May often deliver the best combination of settled weather, uncrowded moorings, and competitive charter rates.
Yacht charter Virgin Gorda reveals the quieter, more exclusive side of the British Virgin Islands, an island of lush green peaks, sheltered bays, and the world-famous Baths, where house-sized granite boulders tumble into turquoise pools and grottos along the southern shore. The island stretches just 8.5 miles from end to end, yet it packs in some of the BVI’s most sought-after anchorages: the yacht-lined lagoon of North Sound, the calm crescent of Savannah Bay, and the reef-protected waters off Spring Bay. The charter fleet visiting Virgin Gorda includes motor yachts of 68′-98′, superyachts above 100′, and luxury catamarans from 55′, with the Yacht Harbour at Spanish Town and the exclusive North Sound moorings serving as the main bases. Peak season spans December to April, when trade winds average 15 to 18 knots and water temperatures hover around 27 °C; November and May bring shoulder-season tranquillity with gentler pricing and fewer boats on the moorings.
Daily rates start from $5,600 on a catamaran or mid-size motor yacht and from $10,200 on latest-model yachts above 78′, plus 5% BVI charter licence tax and APA. Virgin Gorda’s draw is the seamless contrast between barefoot exploration at The Baths and the polished calm of North Sound, where waterfront restaurants, watersport centres, and hillside retreats create a yacht-club atmosphere without the formality.
