Palmer Johnson Yacht Charter

Two boatbuilders, Hans Johnson and Herman Gmack, started the yard at Sturgeon Bay on Lake Michigan in 1918. It spent decades on wooden working and pleasure craft before moving into aluminium and, eventually, into some of the most divisive-looking motor yachts of the 2000s.

About the shipyard

The long partnership with Nuvolari Lenard produced the PJ135s and PJ150s and, at the top of the range, the 65m PJ210. The look — reverse-raked glass and, on several hulls, a gold-anodised finish — is not to everyone's taste and was never meant to be.

The SuperSport series of 2012 is the technically interesting one. It abandoned the conventional hull for a trimaran-style form in carbon composite, gaining both efficiency and usable deck area. Underneath the styling, the engineering was always serious.
