The advance provisioning allowance for St Thomas-based charters typically runs 25 to 35% of the base charter fee. It covers fuel, food, beverages, marina and mooring fees, and any off-yacht excursions or activities arranged by the crew. Your captain provides a transparent accounting, and any unused APA funds are refunded in full at the end of the charter.
St Thomas is a superb family charter base. Calm, sheltered bays like Magens Bay and Sapphire Beach are ideal for young swimmers and snorkellers, and the short ferry crossing to St John opens up national-park beaches with gentle entry. Most catamarans in the fleet feature stable platforms, safety netting, and crew experienced in hosting families with children of all ages.
Charter yachts departing St Thomas typically carry 8 to 12 guests in four to six private en-suite cabins. Larger superyachts above 100′ can host up to 12 overnight guests under USVI maritime regulations, with additional day-charter capacity for harbour parties and celebrations. Your Boatcrowd specialist can recommend the best cabin layout for your group’s size and configuration.
St Thomas to the BVI is one of the Caribbean’s most popular cross-border charter routes. The Narrows crossing to Tortola or Virgin Gorda is roughly 12 to 18 nautical miles, and customs clearance is quick and well-practised for crewed yachts. A seven-day charter from St Thomas easily covers both territories, blending the USVI’s vibrant waterfront culture with the BVI’s secluded anchorages and world-class snorkelling.
Yacht charter St Thomas launches your Caribbean escape from the liveliest island in the US Virgin Islands, a mountainous, 32-square-mile gem where the deep-water harbour of Charlotte Amalie has welcomed sailors for over three centuries. The town’s duty-free shops, Danish-colonial warehouses, and hillside restaurants spill down to a waterfront buzzing with mega-yachts and cruise ships, while the island’s eastern end gives way to the calm turquoise coves of Red Hook and Sapphire Beach. The charter fleet here spans motor yachts of 68′-98′, superyachts above 100′, and luxury catamarans from 55′, primarily based at Yacht Haven Grande and the American Yacht Harbour. Peak season runs December through April, when northeast trades average 15 to 18 knots and daytime highs hover around 28 °C; November and May bring shoulder-season calm with reduced rates and fewer transiting vessels in the harbour.
Daily rates begin from $5,600 on a catamaran or mid-size motor yacht and from $10,200 on latest-model yachts above 78′, plus applicable USVI excise tax and APA. St Thomas’s unmatched advantage is connectivity: Cyril E. King Airport receives direct flights from Miami, New York, Atlanta, and other major US hubs, putting you aboard your yacht within hours of landing, and the BVI’s pristine cays are just a short sail across the Narrows.
