Local knowledgeThe austral winter and spring bring steady southeast trades and lagoon sailing inside an almost unbroken reef; cyclone season (January to March) sits out of the calendar.
For the peak May to November trade-wind season and the festive December to January window, booking six to eight months ahead is recommended, the fleet of around 10 yachts is intimate and fills steadily. The warmer January to April period offers calmer lagoons and can sometimes be arranged four to five months in advance at more competitive rates.
The base rate covers the yacht, professional crew, insurance, and standard on-board equipment including the tender and snorkelling gear. Fuel, provisions, beverages, marina fees, and any excursion costs are funded through the APA (30 to 35% of the charter fee). Mauritian VAT at 15% applies to the base rate. Grand Baie and Port Louis offer excellent provisioning, fresh seafood from the Caudan Waterfront fish market is a highlight, and any unspent APA is refunded at the end of the voyage.
Citizens of most Western countries, including the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia, receive a free entry permit on arrival for stays of up to 90 days. No advance visa application is required. Your Boatcrowd broker can confirm the latest entry requirements for your nationality and assist with any pre-arrival documentation.
Mauritius is superbly family-friendly. The calm, reef-protected lagoons provide warm, shallow water ideal for young swimmers and first-time snorkellers, while shore excursions, visiting the giant tortoises at La Vanille Nature Park, zip-lining through the Chamarel forest canopy, or spotting dolphins at Tamarin Bay, captivate children of every age. Crews regularly adapt menus, pace, and water activities to suit families, and the island’s compact size keeps transfer times short.
Yacht charter Mauritius circles a volcanic island jewel in the south-western Indian Ocean, a place where emerald peaks plunge into lagoons protected by an almost continuous barrier reef, the underwater waterfall illusion off Le Morne Brabant defies belief from the air, and the aroma of vanilla-infused rum and freshly caught marlin drifts from the harbour-side grills of Grand Baie. Around 10 charter yachts operate in Mauritian waters, including 68′-98′ motor yachts perfect for circumnavigating the island’s 177-kilometre coastline, 100′+ superyachts, and 55′+ luxury catamarans whose shallow drafts slip inside the reef lagoon where turquoise water barely covers the white-sand seabed.
May to December is peak season, the south-east trade winds bring dry weather, 23 to 27°C water, and outstanding deep-sea fishing for blue marlin and yellowfin tuna in the Mauritius Trench. January to April is warmer and wetter but delivers the calmest lagoon conditions and the best snorkelling visibility inside the reef. Daily rates start from approximately $4,500/day, climbing to $9,000+/day on superyachts above 89′, plus 15% Mauritian VAT and 30 to 35% APA for fuel, provisions, and marine-park fees. Mauritius’s unique charm is the fusion of cultures and coastline, Creole, Indian, Chinese, and French heritage blend in the island’s cuisine and architecture, while the near-unbroken barrier reef creates a natural swimming pool that wraps the entire island in calm, snorkel-ready turquoise.
