About tri-deck yachts in France
Cannes holds its Yachting Festival each September across the Vieux Port and Port Canto, one of the largest in-water shows in Europe, and Monaco is a short run to the east. A tri-deck yacht has three full decks above the waterline, and the third one usually belongs to the owner. Lengths among the tri-deck yachts listed in France run from 33 m to 42 m. Cannes, Nice and Propriano are among the ports they are lying at.
Buying in France
- VAT and tax
- France is in the EU VAT area and its standard VAT rate is 20% as at September 2026. A "VAT paid" yacht is one with the customs status of Union goods, in free circulation in the EU with import VAT settled. A non-EU-registered yacht owned by a person established outside the EU can generally be used privately in EU waters under temporary admission for up to 18 months without paying import duty or VAT. - Flag and registration
- Registration under the French flag (francisation) and the annual navigation charges are handled by the maritime affairs administration since 1 January 2022, with the annual charge now called the annual tax on personal-use maritime craft. Commercial yachts over 15 metres in international trade can use the French International Register (RIF), while many large private yachts on the Riviera fly foreign flags such as the Red Ensign, Malta or the Cayman Islands.
- Berths
- Port Vauban in Antibes has a superyacht quay for yachts up to 150 metres, the Port of Saint-Tropez has 729 berths with the Estienne d'Orves jetty taking yachts up to 80 metres, and Port de Cap d'Ail has a basin of 10 berths for yachts from 40 to 65 metres. Riviera berths in July and August are in high demand and larger yachts usually book well ahead.
- Refit and survey
- The south of France has substantial refit capacity: at La Ciotat around 150 yachts a year pass through the shipyards, about a hundred of them over 50 metres, with platforms for yachts up to 115 metres and a large dry dock. MB92 also operates refit yards at La Ciotat and Golfe-Juan.
- When to view
- The French Riviera is the heart of the Mediterranean summer season, broadly May to October, with yachts gathering between Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Antibes and Monaco. The Cannes Yachting Festival is held each September in the Vieux Port and Port Canto, and the Régates Royales classic regatta takes place in Cannes in September.

Questions buyers ask
How does buying a yacht through Boatcrowd work?
You tell us which yacht interests you through the enquiry form on her listing. We confirm she is still available at the price shown, collect the documents the seller holds, and arrange a viewing wherever she is lying. From there the usual sequence is an offer subject to survey and sea trial, a deposit held in a client account, the survey and trial themselves, and then closing and registration. The Boatcrowd team coordinates each step and stays with you through it.
What does the VAT status on a listing mean?
VAT paid means European Union value added tax has been settled on the yacht and she can be used privately in EU waters without a further liability arising from that. VAT unpaid means it has not been settled, which suits a buyer who will keep the yacht outside the EU or import her under an arrangement of their own. The difference is a significant part of the asking price, so it is worth establishing before an offer is made. Where the seller has given us the status, it is printed on the listing.
Why do some listings say Price on Request?
Because the seller has chosen not to publish a figure. It is common at the top of the market and on yachts that have only just come available, and it says nothing about where the price sits in either direction. Send an enquiry from the listing and the Boatcrowd team will come back to you with the number and with what it includes.
Do I need a survey and a sea trial?
On any yacht that has been in the water, yes. A survey establishes the condition of the hull, the machinery and the systems, and a sea trial shows how she actually behaves at operating speed and at anchor. Offers are normally made subject to both, so the findings can be discussed before anything is final. On a yacht in build the equivalent is the yard's own sequence of inspections and the handover trials at the end of it.
