Day Charter Routes from Perth

Swan River Sunset Cruise: City Skyline to Fremantle

Depart Elizabeth Quay in the late afternoon and cruise downstream through Melville Water. Pass Kings Park’s 400-hectare botanical escarpment rising above the northern bank, the white arc of Matagarup Bridge, and the heritage mansions of Dalkeith and Peppermint Grove. As the Swan River widens, the Fremantle Doctor (the reliable afternoon south-westerly) fills the sails or cools the sundeck. The sun drops behind the Darling Scarp, painting the river gold. Arrive at Fremantle’s Fishing Boat Harbour as the streetlights come on, and tender ashore for dinner at Bread in Common, Kailis or Bib & Tucker. Rottnest Island Day Trip: Snorkelling, Quokkas and Indian Ocean Views

Depart Fremantle at first light and cruise 12 nautical miles west to Rottnest Island (45 minutes by motor yacht). Anchor in Thomson Bay and tender ashore for a morning of cycling on the island’s car-free roads – quokkas at every turn, salt lakes reflecting the sky, and views across 63 beaches and bays. Return to the yacht for a swim at The Basin (marked snorkelling trail through colourful reef) and a chef-prepared lunch on the aft deck. In the afternoon, cruise to Geordie Bay or Parakeet Bay for more sheltered snorkelling, then set course back to Fremantle as the Indian Ocean sunset turns the western horizon gold. Carnac Island and Cockburn Sound: Sea Lions and Sheltered Waters

Cruise south from Fremantle through Cockburn Sound to Carnac Island (45-minute sail). This rocky island is an important haul-out site for Australian sea lions – males rest on the shore between breeding seasons, and snorkelling alongside these playful, curious animals in the clear water is an experience charter guests never forget. After a morning with the sea lions, cruise south to Shoalwater Islands Marine Park and anchor off Penguin Island (700 metres from Rockingham). Walk the island to see little penguins, pelicans and ospreys. Return to Fremantle via the calm waters of Cockburn Sound, arriving in time for a late-afternoon seafood feast at Fishing Boat Harbour.

Day 1

Swan River and Fremantle

Board at Elizabeth Quay and cruise the Swan River downstream to Fremantle. Pass Kings Park’s botanical escarpment, the riverside mansions of Dalkeith and Peppermint Grove, and the Matagarup Bridge. Arrive at Fremantle’s Victoria Quay in the late morning – explore the WA Maritime Museum, stroll the heritage West End and lunch at Bread in Common (wood-fired sourdough, shared plates, natural wines). In the afternoon, cruise into Fremantle Harbour and berth at Challenger Harbour or Fremantle Sailing Club. Walk to Fishing Boat Harbour for dinner at Kailis or Cicerello’s – fresh fish, cold beer, a working harbour buzzing with life. Overnight at berth in Fremantle.

Day 2

Fremantle to Rottnest Island

Depart Fremantle at first light and cross 12 nautical miles of Indian Ocean to Rottnest Island. Anchor in Thomson Bay and tender ashore for a morning of cycling: quokkas on the paths, salt lakes shimmering inland, lighthouses and heritage buildings punctuating the coastal road. Return to the yacht and relocate to The Basin for snorkelling on the marked underwater trail – 400-plus fish species, reef sharks, green turtles and stingrays move through the clear water. Lunch on the aft deck with views of the turquoise bay. In the afternoon, cruise to Geordie Bay for a calmer anchorage and dinner at Isola Bar & Restaurant – Mediterranean-inspired seafood with Thomson Bay views. Or stay aboard: your chef prepares a sunset dinner on the aft deck as the Indian Ocean sky turns gold. Overnight at anchor off Rottnest.

Day 3

Rottnest Western Bays and Return to Fremantle

A morning exploring Rottnest’s quieter western bays. Cruise to Parakeet Bay – sheltered, shallow, crystal-clear – for a final swim and snorkel. Continue around the western tip to Strickland Bay for views of the Indian Ocean stretching to the horizon (nothing between you and the coast of Africa). Spot humpback whales if visiting in September–November. Turn east and cruise back to Fremantle, arriving by early afternoon. Disembark at Challenger Harbour with time for a farewell walk through Fremantle’s cappuccino strip, the heritage markets, and a final glass of wine at a West End bar.

Day 1

Perth to Fremantle via the Swan River

Board at Elizabeth Quay in the morning. Cruise the Swan River downstream, pausing in Melville Water for a swim in the calm, wide stretch of river backed by Kings Park’s escarpment. Continue past Dalkeith, Peppermint Grove and Point Walter to Fremantle. Berth at Challenger Harbour and walk to the Fremantle Markets, the West End’s heritage streetscape and Fishing Boat Harbour. Lunch at Kailis Fishmarket Café – fresh fish from the Raw Bar, BBQ section and Fry counter. In the afternoon, explore Victoria Quay’s Maritime Museum or stroll to Bread in Common for an early dinner of shared plates and natural wines. Overnight at berth in Fremantle.

Day 2

Fremantle to Carnac Island and Rottnest

Depart Fremantle and cruise south through Cockburn Sound to Carnac Island (45 minutes). Anchor off the rocky western shore and tender close for Australian sea lion encounters – watch the males hauled out on the rocks, then slip into the water for snorkelling alongside them. After a morning with the sea lions, cruise west across the Indian Ocean to Rottnest Island (approximately 90 minutes from Carnac). Anchor in Thomson Bay in the late afternoon. Tender ashore for a walk to meet the quokkas, then return to the yacht for a sunset dinner on the aft deck – the Indian Ocean sky ablaze from horizon to horizon. Overnight at anchor off Thomson Bay.

Day 3

Rottnest Island Circumnavigation

A full day exploring Rottnest’s 63 beaches by yacht and tender. Start at The Basin for morning snorkelling on the marked trail. Cruise north to Little Salmon Bay (informative snorkel trail) and then west around the island to Parakeet Bay – secluded, shallow, perfectly sheltered. Lunch on the aft deck. Continue around the western tip past Strickland Bay and Cathedral Rocks – dramatic limestone formations sculpted by the Indian Ocean. Anchor at Stark Bay or Ricey Beach for afternoon swimming in pristine water. Cruise back to Geordie Bay for the evening. Dinner at Geordie’s Café & Art Gallery (locally roasted coffee, craft cocktails, licensed dining) or on board with a chef-prepared meal. Overnight at Geordie Bay – calm, uncrowded, stars overhead.

Day 4

Rottnest to Penguin Island and Return

20 nm

Depart Rottnest at first light and cruise south-east to Shoalwater Islands Marine Park (approximately 20 nautical miles). Anchor off Penguin Island and tender ashore to see the colony of little penguins – the world’s smallest penguin species. Pelicans, ospreys and seabirds nest on nearby islets. Snorkel in the marine park’s clear waters among reef fish, rays and octopus. After a chef-prepared brunch on the aft deck, cruise north along the coast past Cockburn Sound and Fremantle, arriving at Challenger Harbour by early afternoon. Disembark in Fremantle for a farewell stroll and a final meal at one of the West End’s celebrated restaurants. Transfer to Perth Airport for an evening departure.
