Tipping a Yacht Crew: How Much and How It Is Paid
A crew gratuity is discretionary and nobody aboard will raise it with you. This page covers the customary figure, who receives it and when it is handed over, and what it comes to in money at each yacht size.
How Much, and to Whom
Between 5 and 15% of the charter fee is the range, and 10% is the figure most guests settle on. It goes to the captain at the end of the charter and is shared among the whole crew, and it is separate from the APA: the float pays for what the yacht consumes, the gratuity is for the people who ran her.
None of it is billed. It does not appear on your quote, the crew will not bring it up, and it is genuinely a matter for you at the end of the week.
What 10% Comes To
| Yacht size | Median week, lowest to highest destination | 10% of that | Crew aboard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 to 100 ft 24 to 30 m | $45,290 - $90,000 12 destinations | $4,529 - $9,000 | about 4 |
| 100 to 130 ft 30 to 40 m | $33,300 - $175,098 14 destinations | $3,330 - $17,510 | about 6 |
| 130 to 160 ft 40 to 49 m | $77,000 - $258,051 9 destinations | $7,700 - $25,805 | about 9 |
| 160 ft and above 49 m and above | $126,000 - $740,000 9 destinations | $12,600 - $74,000 | about 12 |
Figures are in US dollars, which is how our rate bands are held. The week column is the range of destination medians for that size, from the lowest destination to the highest. It is not a fleet-wide percentile: pooling every yacht would weight the answer by how many boats each destination happens to list.
The crew column is the median complement of the yachts we list in that size class, which is the number the gratuity is shared between.
Where the figures come from
Every figure on this page is read from the same nightly data our destination pages use. Nothing here is a market average or a rule of thumb, and where a destination publishes no figure it is left out rather than filled in.
