Koh Lipe Guide: Luxury Yacht Charter in Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe is Thailand’s frontier charter destination – a tiny island at the bottom of the Andaman Sea, just 30 nautical miles from Langkawi, Malaysia, sitting within the vast Tarutao National Marine Park. The park was established in 1974 and covers 1,490 km² of protected ocean, encompassing over 50 islands ranging from the forested bulk of Koh Tarutao to the uninhabited coral atolls of the Adang–Rawi group. What draws charter yachts south to Koh Lipe is the marine life: pristine coral reefs in excellent condition (staghorn, table and brain corals), healthy fish populations (roughly a quarter of the world’s tropical fish species are represented), and encounters with dolphins, green sea turtles, blacktip reef sharks and – if you are lucky – the rare dugong that still grazes the seagrass beds in these waters.
Koh Lipe itself is small enough to walk across in 20 minutes, with three main beaches: Sunrise Beach (the longest, facing east), Sunset Beach (facing west, dramatic evening views to Koh Adang) and Pattaya Beach (the busiest, where the ferries land). The island’s infrastructure is modest compared to Phuket or Phi Phi – there are no full-service marinas, and yachts anchor off the beaches or in the sheltered channel between Koh Lipe and Koh Adang. Customs and immigration clearance is available on the island (500 baht immigration, 400 baht customs, 200 baht marine office). What you sacrifice in marina facilities, you gain in exclusivity: very few charter yachts make it this far south, and the cruising ground – 50-plus islands, secluded anchorages, dive sites with visibility exceeding 30 metres – feels genuinely undiscovered.
Charter season at Koh Lipe runs from October through May. Outside those months, the southwest monsoon makes conditions too rough for comfortable cruising. Enquire with Boatcrowd for availability on our Koh Lipe itineraries.
Why Charter a Yacht in Koh Lipe
The Maldives of Thailand
Koh Lipe’s beaches – Pattaya Beach, Sunrise Beach, and Sunset Beach – boast powdery white sand and crystal-clear water in dazzling shades of turquoise. The comparison to the Maldives is well-earned, but Koh Lipe adds a layer of Thai island character with its charming Walking Street, local seafood restaurants, and laid-back vibe that feels like Thai island life as it used to be.
Pristine Coral Reefs in a Protected Marine Park
The Tarutao National Marine Park is one of Thailand’s oldest and best-protected marine reserves. The coral here is in excellent condition – staghorn, table and brain corals in vibrant health, supporting lionfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, groupers, trumpetfish, clownfish and parrotfish in extraordinary abundance. Pinnacle dives like the Lighthouse South Tip (a submerged pinnacle dropping 50+ metres, with its shallowest point at 12–14 metres) offer encounters with larger pelagics. For guests who care about reef health and marine conservation, Koh Lipe is Thailand at its most unspoilt.
Rare Wildlife Encounters
The waters around Koh Lipe support populations of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, green sea turtles and the endangered dugong – one of the few places in Thailand where this gentle marine mammal is still occasionally seen grazing on seagrass beds. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows around the Adang–Rawi group, and manta rays visit the deeper pinnacles during the right season. On land, Koh Adang’s jungle interior is home to monitor lizards, flying squirrels and a rich birdlife.
Frontier Exclusivity
Very few charter yachts venture this far south, which means the anchorages, dive sites and beaches around Koh Lipe feel genuinely undiscovered. On a typical day, your yacht may be the only private vessel at anchor. The 50-plus islands of the Tarutao group offer weeks of exploration – most charter guests see only a fraction of what is available.

Best Time to Charter in Koh Lipe
Peak Season: February to April
The driest months, with the calmest seas and best underwater visibility. Air temperatures run 27–34°C (81–93°F), and dive conditions are at their finest. This is the optimal window for Koh Lipe charters.
Charter Season: November to May
The full charter season spans the northeast monsoon period. November and May are shoulder months with occasional showers, but conditions are generally good for cruising. December through January can see busier ferry traffic around Koh Lipe itself, though the outer islands remain quiet.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to Koh Lipe by yacht?
Most Koh Lipe charters depart from Phuket and work south through the Andaman’s highlights – Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Rok – before reaching Koh Lipe. The full passage is roughly 120 nautical miles from Phuket, typically covered over two to three days with overnight stops at spectacular anchorages along the way. Alternatively, a charter can originate from Langkawi, Malaysia (30 nautical miles to the south), for guests arriving from that direction.
Is Koh Lipe suitable for diving beginners?
Yes. The reefs around Koh Lipe and the Adang group include plenty of shallow sites (5–12 metres) with excellent coral coverage and abundant marine life. The calm, warm water and gentle currents make conditions ideal for first-time divers and snorkellers. Deeper pinnacle sites like the Lighthouse South Tip are available for advanced divers.
Are there facilities on Koh Lipe?
Koh Lipe has restaurants, small shops and basic accommodation along its three beaches. There are no full-service marinas, fuel stations or chandleries. Charter yachts operate self-sufficiently, with provisioning arranged before departure from Phuket or at stops along the route. Customs and immigration clearance is available on the island.
Can I see dugongs near Koh Lipe?
The waters around the Tarutao group are one of the few remaining habitats for the endangered dugong in Thai waters. Sightings are not guaranteed – dugongs are shy and elusive – but your captain knows the seagrass beds where they are most often spotted. Early mornings in calm, shallow water offer the best chance.
What about navigation hazards?
The Tarutao region has coral reefs that can be shallow and extend further from shore than expected. Your captain uses up-to-date charts and local knowledge to navigate safely. Depths can decrease sharply, and some reefs are exposed at low water. This is experienced-captain territory, and Boatcrowd ensures all Koh Lipe charters are skippered by crews with local Andaman knowledge.
Is Koh Lipe really like the Maldives?
The comparison is apt for the quality of beaches and water clarity. Koh Lipe’s powdery white sand and luminous turquoise water genuinely rival Maldivian atolls. The key differences are that Koh Lipe has more island character (a small village, Walking Street, local culture) and is significantly more affordable. For yacht charter guests, the surrounding national-park islands provide an even more exclusive experience than Koh Lipe’s beaches alone.
