Being the second hull built to a design is its own kind of provenance. The refinements a yard makes on an earlier hull often turn up already worked in on the next one, and Next carries hers well. Columbus completed her in 2015, and a 2022 refit keeps the specification current for a buyer who wants an established design rather than an untested one.
Build and provenance
Next is Columbus's 40M Sport Hybrid, a semi-displacement design built in aluminium, with exterior lines by Hydro Tec and an interior by Hot Lab. At 40 metres, or 131 feet, she carries 398 gross tonnes on an 8.2-metre beam and a 2.3-metre draft, a scale that gives a buyer real volume without the running costs of a much longer yacht. Her 2022 refit was followed by a ten-year classification survey, and she is described as maintained in excellent condition, with upgrades made along the way.
Layout and accommodation
Eleven guests sleep across five cabins, with a crew of eight to run the boat and look after them, generous cover for a yacht of this size.
Performance and engineering
She cruises at 15 knots, a pace suited to coastal routes and short hops between anchorages rather than long crossings, in keeping with a semi-displacement hull built for comfort over speed.
On deck and at anchor
Her sporty exterior lines carry through onto the open deck, giving her the profile of a yacht built to be looked at from the water as much as lived aboard.

Buying Costs
- Survey
- A buyer normally commissions a condition survey, and a sea trial, once an offer is accepted and before the sale becomes unconditional. The cost depends on her size and on where she is lifted, and it is the buyer who appoints the surveyor.
- Registration and flag
- She will be registered on a flag of the buyer's choosing, which carries its own fees and its own survey and crew requirements. Where the yacht is owned through a company, the shares rather than the vessel may change hands, which changes what is payable.
- VAT and import
- Whether VAT is due, and where, depends on the yacht's current status, her flag, the buyer's residency and where she is delivered. Where the seller has stated her VAT status, it is shown with the asking price on her page, and it is confirmed in writing before an offer is made.
- Running costs
- Crew, berthing, insurance, class and annual maintenance continue from the day she is yours. A yacht that is also chartered earns against them, and we will set out what her season has actually returned before you commit.
