Komodo Itineraries: Phinisi and Yacht Charter Routes
Komodo National Park’s compact geography means a single week covers the highlights thoroughly: Komodo dragons on two islands, world-class diving at multiple pinnacle sites, manta ray encounters, pink-sand beaches and the iconic Padar sunrise. The itinerary below is fully customisable – your captain and dive master adjust daily plans based on tides, currents, weather and your group’s priorities. All timings are approximate and designed for a phinisi or motor yacht departing and returning to Labuan Bajo.
Day Charter Routes from Labuan Bajo
Komodo Discovery: Rinca Dragons, Pink Beach and Snorkelling
Depart Labuan Bajo by 07:00 and cruise to Rinca Island for a ranger-guided Komodo dragon trek at Loh Buaya – roughly 90 minutes from port. After the trek, your phinisi continues to Pink Beach on Komodo Island’s eastern shore for snorkelling over shallow coral and a beachside lunch. Afternoon stop at Kanawa or Bidadari Island for a final snorkel before returning to Labuan Bajo by late afternoon. This full-day route covers the park’s two signature experiences – dragons and diving – and is ideal for guests with limited time.
Northern Dive Day: Castle Rock and Gili Lawa
Depart early for the park’s northern dive sites, roughly two hours from Labuan Bajo. Morning dive at Castle Rock – a submerged pinnacle attracting dense schools of surgeonfish, trevally and reef sharks. Surface for brunch, then a second dive at Crystal Rock or The Passage. After lunch, hike Gili Lawa Darat’s summit for panoramic views, then snorkel the sheltered bay before the return cruise. Best suited to certified divers seeking Komodo’s most dramatic underwater terrain.
7-Day Komodo Phinisi Charter Itinerary
Day 1: Labuan Bajo to Sebayur Island
Board your phinisi at Labuan Bajo harbour by late morning. After the welcome briefing and a fresh Indonesian lunch on deck, cruise north-west to Sebayur Island – roughly 45 minutes from port. Snorkel the house reef in 3–8 metres of clear water: healthy hard-coral gardens, butterflyfish, angelfish, moray eels and the occasional reef shark. Your dive master briefs equipment and conditions for the week ahead. Sundowners on the upper deck as the sun drops behind Flores.
Day 2: Gili Lawa, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock
An early start for the cruise north to Gili Lawa Darat. Climb to the summit for a sunrise panorama across Komodo’s northern waters, then descend for breakfast. Morning dive at Castle Rock: the submerged pinnacle rises from 40+ metres to 4 metres below the surface, and the currents here fuel extraordinary fish life – dense schools of surgeonfish, fusiliers, trevally, Napoleon wrasse and white-tip reef sharks. Afternoon dive at Crystal Rock, a smaller pinnacle draped in soft corals and sea fans. Anchor overnight in Gili Lawa’s sheltered bay.
Day 3: Komodo Island – Dragons and Pink Beach
Cruise south to Komodo Island for a ranger-guided dragon trek at Loh Liang. Walk through dry savannah and monsoon forest as dragons bask, forage and patrol – accompanied by water buffalo, Timor deer and wild boar. After the trek, reposition to Pink Beach on Komodo’s eastern shore: snorkel the shallow coral garden (sea turtles, parrotfish, clownfish in 1–3 metres), then enjoy a beach barbecue prepared by your crew. Return to the phinisi for a starlit dinner on the upper deck.
Day 4: Karang Makassar (Manta Point) and Padar Island
Morning at Karang Makassar, Komodo’s legendary manta cleaning station. Your dive master times the entry for the incoming current as oceanic manta rays with wingspans of up to four metres glide in to be cleaned by wrasse – drift in 10–15 metres for one of the world’s great wildlife encounters. After lunch, cruise to Padar Island for the afternoon summit hike: a 30-minute climb rewarding with the park’s most photographed view – three bays of pink, white and black sand curving away beneath you. Swim in one of the bays, then sundowners on the aft deck.
Day 5: Rinca Island and Horseshoe Bay
Rinca hosts roughly 2,000 Komodo dragons in a compact, rugged landscape. Choose from short, medium or long ranger-guided treks at Loh Buaya, where sightings are virtually guaranteed in the denser terrain. After the trek, cruise to Horseshoe Bay for snorkelling over coral-covered rock. Afternoon water sports: kayaking, paddleboarding and swimming from the phinisi’s swim platform. A traditional rijsttafel dinner on the upper deck – a lavish Indonesian rice-table spread.
Day 6: Batu Bolong and Tatawa Besar
Batu Bolong is Komodo’s signature dive: a solitary rock pinnacle with walls encrusted in soft corals, sea fans and sponges in every conceivable colour. Strong currents draw enormous schools of fish – surgeonfish, sweetlips, batfish, Napoleon wrasse and white-tip reef sharks. Your dive master selects the approach based on conditions. Afternoon at Tatawa Besar for a gentler reef – a sloping coral garden with excellent macro life including nudibranchs, frogfish and pygmy seahorses. Farewell dinner aboard as the stars appear over the Flores Sea.
Day 7: Kanawa Island and Return to Labuan Bajo
A relaxed final morning at Kanawa Island, a coral-fringed island roughly 30 minutes from Labuan Bajo. The house reef is superb for easy snorkelling – colourful hard corals, clouds of anthias and the occasional sea turtle. Final brunch on deck before the short cruise back to Labuan Bajo harbour, arriving by midday for afternoon flights.
