Crete Itineraries: Day Charters and Multi-Day Routes
Crete’s vast coastline and remarkable diversity reward careful itinerary planning. The routes below are designed to showcase the island’s range – from the sheltered luxury of the northeast to the wild grandeur of the south – while maintaining a pace that allows genuine immersion at each anchorage. The three-day and four-day routes are designed to combine into a comprehensive seven-day voyage that covers the finest highlights of western and eastern Crete.
Day Charter: Spinalonga and the Gulf of Mirabello
Departure: Agios Nikolaos Marina | Duration: Full day | Distance: approximately 22 nm
Morning
Depart Agios Nikolaos and cruise north to Spinalonga Island (10 nm, roughly 50 minutes). Step ashore to explore the Venetian fortress, built in 1579 to guard the entrance to the Gulf of Mirabello, and the evocative remains of the leper colony that operated here until 1957. The fortifications, narrow streets and abandoned houses create an atmosphere that is equal parts beautiful and haunting.
Midday
Cruise to Kolokytha, a sheltered cove just south of Spinalonga with turquoise water over white sand (3 nm). Anchor for swimming and snorkelling in water so clear the yacht’s shadow is visible on the seabed. Lunch aboard, with the fortress of Spinalonga framed perfectly in the background.
Afternoon
Continue south to Elounda (5 nm) for a late-afternoon swim off the luxury coast, or tender ashore for a drink at one of the waterfront bars. Cruise back to Agios Nikolaos as the late light catches the Dikti Mountains behind the town (4 nm). A gentle, rewarding day that combines history, swimming and some of the finest scenery in eastern Crete.
Day Charter: Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa
Departure: Chania (Souda Bay) | Duration: Full day | Distance: approximately 40 nm
Morning
Depart Souda Bay at first light and cruise west along the northern coast towards the Gramvousa Peninsula (20 nm, roughly 90 minutes at cruising speed). Round the cape and approach Balos Lagoon from the sea – the view as the lagoon opens up, with its impossible shades of turquoise and aquamarine over white and pink sand, is one of the most stunning arrivals in Greek yachting. Anchor in the deeper water outside the lagoon and tender in.
Midday
Spend the middle of the day in the lagoon: swimming in the warm shallows, paddleboarding across the glass-calm water, or simply floating in the knee-deep turquoise. Lunch aboard with the lagoon as your backdrop. The day-trip boats depart by mid-afternoon, leaving the anchorage in peaceful quiet.
Afternoon
Before departing, cruise the short distance to Gramvousa Island (3 nm) and view the Venetian fortress perched on its rocky summit – built in 1579 and once a notorious pirate stronghold. Return to Chania via the northern coast (20 nm), arriving in the Venetian harbour as the waterfront restaurants come alive for the evening.
Day Charter: Southern Coast Discovery
Departure: Hora Sfakion | Duration: Full day | Distance: approximately 28 nm
Morning
Depart Hora Sfakion and cruise west along the dramatic southern coast, where the White Mountains plunge directly into the sea (12 nm to Loutro, roughly 45 minutes). Arrive at Loutro, a whitewashed village in a semi-circular bay accessible only by boat. Tender ashore for a Greek coffee at a waterfront taverna while the crew prepares the water toys.
Midday
Continue west to Agia Roumeli (8 nm), where the Samaria Gorge meets the sea. Anchor in the bay and swim in the remarkably clear water where the gorge’s river flows into the Libyan Sea. Lunch aboard with views of the gorge’s mouth and the mountains rising behind. Adventurous guests can tender ashore for a walk into the lower section of the gorge.
Afternoon
Return east to Hora Sfakion via Loutro (8 nm), pausing for a final swim in one of the small coves along the coast. The late-afternoon light on the southern cliffs is extraordinary – golden stone, deep blue sea, and the White Mountains catching the last of the sun above. Arrive back at Hora Sfakion by early evening.
Three-Day Route: Western Crete – Chania, Balos and the Southern Shore
This route explores the wild, mountainous western end of Crete, from the Venetian elegance of Chania to the lagoon of Balos and the remote southern coast. It serves as the first half of a seven-day voyage when combined with the four-day eastern route.
Day 1 – Chania to Balos Lagoon
Distance: approximately 25 nm | Cruising time: 2 hours
Depart Souda Bay in the morning and cruise west along the northern coast, passing the Rodopou Peninsula. Round the Gramvousa cape and enter Balos Lagoon from the sea. Spend the afternoon in the lagoon: swimming, paddleboarding and exploring the shallows. Late afternoon, cruise to Gramvousa Island to view the Venetian fortress. Overnight at anchor in the sheltered waters of the Gramvousa Peninsula.
Day 2 – Gramvousa to Paleochora
Distance: approximately 35 nm | Cruising time: 3 hours
Depart early and round the western tip of Crete, transitioning from the northern to the southern coast. The character of the island changes dramatically: the gentle, harbour-dotted north gives way to towering cliffs and wild mountain scenery. Arrive at Paleochora, a laid-back town on a headland with beaches on both sides. Tender ashore for lunch at a seafront taverna and explore the ruins of the Venetian castle. Overnight in the protected anchorage east of the headland.
Day 3 – Paleochora to Hora Sfakion via Sougia and Loutro
Distance: approximately 28 nm | Cruising time: 2.5 hours
A day of southern coast cruising at its finest. Depart Paleochora and cruise east to Sougia (10 nm), a quiet village with a long pebble beach and clear water. Continue to Agia Roumeli (8 nm), the gateway to the Samaria Gorge – anchor and swim where the gorge meets the sea. Cruise on to Loutro (8 nm) for a late-afternoon swim in the turquoise bay, then make the short passage to Hora Sfakion (2 nm) for overnight. Dine ashore at a cliff-top taverna overlooking the Libyan Sea.
Four-Day Route: Eastern Crete – Rethymno to Agios Nikolaos
This route traverses the island from Rethymno in the centre to Agios Nikolaos in the east, combining Venetian heritage, Minoan archaeology, wine country and the island’s most luxurious anchorages. It forms the second half of a seven-day voyage when preceded by the three-day western route (transferring overland from Hora Sfakion to Rethymno, a 90-minute drive through the mountains).
Day 1 – Rethymno to Heraklion
Distance: approximately 35 nm | Cruising time: 2.5 hours
Depart Rethymno marina in the morning and cruise east along the northern coast to Heraklion. Berth at the yacht marina and arrange a private transfer to the Palace of Knossos (15 minutes by car). Spend the late morning exploring the Minoan palace complex – the Throne Room, the Grand Staircase, the dolphin frescoes of the Queen’s Megaron. After lunch, visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion to see the original frescoes and artefacts. Return to the yacht and, if time allows, arrange a wine-tasting excursion to the estates around Archanes (20 minutes south). Overnight at Heraklion marina.
Day 2 – Heraklion to Dia Island and Hersonissos
Distance: approximately 20 nm | Cruising time: 1.5 hours
Depart Heraklion and cruise north to Dia Island (7 nm), an uninhabited nature reserve with protected bays ideal for snorkelling. The island’s profile, seen from the south, is said to resemble a giant lizard. Anchor in one of the southern bays for a morning swim in crystalline water, then cruise east to the coast near Malia (13 nm), where the Minoan palace ruins can be visited via a short tender ride and walk. Overnight in a sheltered bay east of Hersonissos.
Day 3 – Hersonissos to Spinalonga and Elounda
Distance: approximately 30 nm | Cruising time: 2.5 hours
A morning passage east to the Gulf of Mirabello (30 nm), rounding the headland at Tholos and entering one of the most beautiful stretches of water in Crete. Arrive at Spinalonga Island by late morning and explore the Venetian fortress and leper colony. After the visit, cruise south to Kolokytha for a swim in the turquoise cove, then continue to Elounda for overnight. Tender ashore for dinner at one of Elounda’s acclaimed waterfront restaurants.
Day 4 – Elounda to Agios Nikolaos via Mirabello Gulf
Distance: approximately 12 nm | Cruising time: 1 hour
A leisurely final day. Depart Elounda and explore the smaller bays and coves of the Mirabello Gulf – the water here is among the clearest in the Aegean, and the backdrop of the Dikti Mountains is magnificent. Stop for a final swim at a quiet cove, then cruise into Agios Nikolaos marina (4 nm). For guests extending their charter, the eastern coast beyond Agios Nikolaos – Vai Beach, the Minoan Palace of Zakros, and the remote anchorages of the far east – awaits as a superb continuation.
Combining the Routes: Seven-Day Crete Itinerary (Western Half)
The three-day and four-day routes above are designed to combine into a single seven-day voyage covering the western half of Crete and the northern coast from Chania to Agios Nikolaos. Begin with the three-day western route (Chania – Balos – southern coast – Hora Sfakion), transfer overland to Rethymno (your crew will reposition the yacht), and continue with the four-day eastern route (Rethymno – Heraklion – Spinalonga – Agios Nikolaos). The result is a comprehensive west-to-east traverse that takes in Venetian harbours, Minoan palaces, mountain gorges, remote southern anchorages, volcanic wine country and the luxurious waters of the Gulf of Mirabello – an itinerary that captures Crete’s full character in a single, unforgettable week.
