Puerto Rico Itineraries: Day Charters and Multi-Day Routes
Puerto Rico’s eastern coast and the Spanish Virgin Islands offer an ideal cruising ground for day charters and multi-day itineraries alike. Distances are manageable – Culebra is just 17 nautical miles from Fajardo, Vieques roughly 8 miles – and the anchorages are well protected. The itineraries below are designed to be combined: a guest looking at the 3-day and 4-day routes can stitch them together into a 7-day voyage covering Puerto Rico’s east coast, Culebra, Vieques and the southern coast without repeating a single stop. Every itinerary is fully customisable – your Boatcrowd charter specialist and onboard captain tailor stops, pacing and activities to your group’s interests and the conditions on the day.
Day Charter Routes
Icacos Island and Palominos
Depart Puerto del Rey Marina in Fajardo mid-morning and cruise 1.5 miles offshore to Icacos Island – an uninhabited cay surrounded by crystal-clear water and vibrant coral reef. Anchor in shallow turquoise water, set up paddleboards and snorkel gear, and spend the morning swimming among colourful reef fish, rays and the occasional sea turtle. Your chef serves lunch on the aft deck or as a beach picnic on the sand. In the afternoon, cruise a short distance west to Palominos Island for a final swim in the calm, sheltered waters. Return to Fajardo by late afternoon.
Culebra Day Trip – Flamenco Beach and Luis Peña
Depart Fajardo at first light for the 17-nautical-mile crossing to Culebra – roughly 50 minutes at cruising speed. Arrive at Flamenco Beach before the ferry crowds and enjoy a morning of swimming and snorkelling on one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. After lunch aboard, cruise west to the Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve for an afternoon of snorkelling in the marine sanctuary – hawksbill turtles, eagle rays and pristine coral in sheltered, clear water. Return to Fajardo in the golden late-afternoon light.
Vieques and Bioluminescence
Cruise south-east from Fajardo to Vieques – roughly 8 nautical miles, about 30 minutes. Spend the day exploring the island’s beautiful beaches: Sun Bay (a wide crescent of sand backed by coconut palms), Playa Negra (black volcanic sand) and the secluded bays along the southern coast. Your crew sets up a beach picnic and water toys at a sheltered cove. As darkness falls, tender ashore for the evening’s highlight: a guided kayak excursion into Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay on Earth. Paddle through water that glows electric blue with every stroke, then return to the yacht for a nightcap under the stars. Return to Fajardo late evening.
Multi-Day Itineraries
3-Day Puerto Rico Yacht Charter Itinerary: Fajardo, Culebra and Vieques
Day 1: Fajardo to Culebra – Flamenco Beach and Tamarindo
Board your yacht at Puerto del Rey Marina in Fajardo by mid-morning. After a welcome briefing and a champagne toast on the flybridge, cruise east across the Vieques Passage to Culebra – 17 nautical miles, roughly 50 minutes. Anchor off Flamenco Beach and spend the late morning swimming and snorkelling on this legendary stretch of white sand. Your chef lays out lunch on the aft deck – fresh ceviche, grilled mahi-mahi and a chilled rosé – with the turquoise water of the bay as your backdrop. In the afternoon, cruise to Tamarindo Beach on Culebra’s southern coast for sea-turtle snorkelling in the warm, clear shallows. Anchor overnight in Ensenada Honda, Culebra’s protected main harbour, where the holding is excellent in 3–10 metres over sand and mud.
Day 2: Culebra – Luis Peña Reserve and Carlos Rosario
Spend the morning at the Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve, picking up a free mooring ball and snorkelling the marine sanctuary’s pristine reef – hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, nurse sharks and hundreds of colourful reef fish in sheltered, crystal-clear water. After lunch aboard, tender to Carlos Rosario Beach for a second snorkelling session over one of Puerto Rico’s healthiest coral formations. In the late afternoon, cruise south to Culebrita, a tiny uninhabited island off Culebra’s eastern tip, for a sunset swim and a walk to the historic 1886 Culebrita Lighthouse ruins. Dinner aboard in a calm anchorage, with the Milky Way overhead and the lights of the distant mainland on the western horizon.
Day 3: Culebra to Vieques – Beaches and Bioluminescence
Cruise south from Culebra to Vieques – roughly 12 nautical miles, about 35 minutes. Spend the morning exploring Vieques’s quieter south-coast beaches: Sun Bay (a palm-fringed crescent with calm water) and the secluded coves beyond. Your crew sets up paddleboards and a beach barbecue at a sheltered cove accessible only by water. In the late afternoon, cruise to the western shore of Vieques and prepare for the evening’s highlight: a guided kayak excursion into Mosquito Bay at nightfall. Paddle through water that glows electric blue with every stroke as up to 2.1 million dinoflagellates per gallon respond to your movement. Return to the yacht for a nightcap, then cruise back to Fajardo overnight or at first light the following morning.
Guests looking for a longer voyage can combine this 3-day Spanish Virgin Islands route with the 4-day itinerary below for a 7-day charter covering Culebra, Vieques, Puerto Rico’s east coast, Old San Juan and the southern coast – without repeating a single stop.
