St Croix Itineraries: Day Charters and Multi-Day Routes
St Croix’s north coast offers the island’s headline attractions – Buck Island, Cane Bay, Salt River – while the west coast and Frederiksted add history, shore diving and a quieter Caribbean feel. The 3-day and 4-day itineraries below cover different stretches of coast and can be combined into a 7-day voyage without repeating a single anchorage. Day charter routes offer standalone outings from Christiansted. Every itinerary is fully customisable by your captain and Boatcrowd charter specialist.
Day Charter Routes from Christiansted
Christiansted to Buck Island: The Essential Day Out
Depart Christiansted’s harbour mid-morning and cruise 1.5 nautical miles north-east to Buck Island (15 minutes). Pick up a mooring in the reef-protected lagoon and swim ashore to Turtle Beach – pristine white sand backed by sea-grape trees, accessible only by boat. Spend the morning on the marked underwater snorkel trail through elkhorn coral formations alive with blue tangs, parrotfish, trumpetfish and angelfish. Hawksbill turtles are regularly spotted. After a chef’s lunch on the aft deck (grilled mahi-mahi, tropical fruit, Cruzan rum punch), hike the short trail to Buck Island’s summit for 360-degree views. Return to Christiansted for a sunset drink on the boardwalk. Duration: 7–9 hours.
Christiansted to Salt River Bay: History and Bioluminescence
Cruise west along the north coast to Salt River Bay (roughly 4 nautical miles, 20 minutes). Spend the morning exploring this national historical park: dive or snorkel the east or west wall of Salt River Canyon (dropping from 12 metres to 300+ metres), kayak through the mangrove wetlands, and learn about the bay’s significance as the site of Columbus’s 1493 landing. Your chef serves lunch at anchor. In the late afternoon, the yacht holds position while you arrange the bioluminescent kayak excursion for after dark – paddling through electric-blue glowing water in transparent-bottom kayaks is the highlight of many a St Croix charter. Return to Christiansted under the stars. Duration: 8–10 hours (including evening bioluminescence).
Christiansted to Cane Bay: The Dive and Snorkel Run
Head west along the north shore to Cane Bay (roughly 8 nautical miles, 30 minutes). Anchor offshore and dive or snorkel the Cane Bay Wall – the reef starts in just 6 metres and drops vertically to over 1,000 metres at the edge of the Puerto Rico Trench. Even snorkellers can appreciate the shallow reef’s vibrant coral heads, parrotfish, trumpetfish and damselfish. After the dive, swim ashore for a drink at one of the beach bars (Eat at Cane Bay is the local favourite). Your chef serves a late lunch on the aft deck. Return to Christiansted in the afternoon. Duration: 6–8 hours.
3-Day St Croix Yacht Charter Itinerary: The North Coast
Day 1: Christiansted to Buck Island
Board your yacht at Christiansted Marina by mid-morning. Cruise north-east to Buck Island (1.5 nautical miles, 15 minutes) and pick up a mooring in the lagoon. Spend the morning on the underwater snorkel trail and Turtle Beach. Your chef serves lunch on the aft deck – perhaps johnnycakes with salt fish, fresh tropical fruit and a chilled Cruzan mojito. In the afternoon, hike to the island’s summit for panoramic views, then snorkel the outer reef where larger species – eagle rays, barracuda, nurse sharks – cruise past. Return to Christiansted for an evening on the boardwalk: Fort Christiansvaern glows yellow in the fading light, and the waterfront restaurants serve fresh-caught fish with views over the harbour.
Day 2: Salt River Bay and Bioluminescence
Cruise west to Salt River Bay (4 nautical miles). Spend the morning diving or snorkelling Salt River Canyon’s east wall – black coral, barrel sponges and eagle rays in water that drops from 12 metres to over 300 metres. Explore the mangrove wetlands by kayak and visit the archaeological overlook marking Columbus’s 1493 landing site. Your chef prepares a leisurely lunch on the aft deck. In the late afternoon, the yacht repositions to the bay’s inner waters while you arrange the bioluminescent kayak excursion. As darkness falls, paddle through water that glows electric blue with every stroke – one of the most magical experiences in the Caribbean. Anchor overnight at Salt River.
Day 3: Cane Bay and Return to Christiansted
Cruise west to Cane Bay (4 nautical miles from Salt River). Morning dive on the Cane Bay Wall – descend over the edge into the blue, past barrel sponges the size of bathtubs and black coral trees, with the Puerto Rico Trench’s abyss below. For non-divers, the shallow reef offers excellent snorkelling with vibrant coral, parrotfish and trumpetfish. Lunch ashore at a Cane Bay beach bar or on the yacht. In the early afternoon, cruise east back to Christiansted (8 nautical miles, 30 minutes), arriving in time for a farewell stroll through the Danish colonial streets and a last rum cocktail on the boardwalk.
4-Day St Croix Yacht Charter Itinerary: Full Island Circuit
Day 1: Christiansted to Green Cay and Buck Island
Board at Christiansted by mid-morning. Cruise east along the north coast to Green Cay – a small wildlife refuge island that is home to the critically endangered St Croix ground lizard (found nowhere else on earth). Snorkel the reef surrounding the cay, then continue to Buck Island for the afternoon. Follow the underwater snorkel trail, swim at Turtle Beach, and hike to the summit. Your chef serves a sunset dinner on the aft deck as the yacht anchors off Buck Island’s western shore – grilled Caribbean lobster, roasted plantains, and a bottle of something cold.
Day 2: North Coast to Salt River and Cane Bay
Cruise west along the north shore. First stop: Salt River Bay for a morning dive on the east or west wall of Salt River Canyon and a kayak through the mangrove preserve. Continue west to Cane Bay for a late-morning snorkel or dive on the famous wall. Lunch on board, then an afternoon of watersports at Cane Bay’s calm anchorage. In the evening, return to Salt River for the bioluminescent kayak – arranged in advance with local outfitters, departing after dark on a moonless or crescent-moon night. The glowing water, the stars overhead and the silence of the bay make this an unforgettable experience. Anchor overnight at Salt River or Cane Bay.
Day 3: Frederiksted, Cruzan Rum and the West Coast
Cruise south-west along the coast to Frederiksted (roughly 12 nautical miles from Cane Bay, 45 minutes). Anchor off the town and dive or snorkel the Frederiksted Pier – the pilings are encrusted with sponges, seahorses, frogfish and octopus, and the sandy bottom shelters garden eels and southern stingrays. Tender ashore and hire a car for a morning visit to the Cruzan Rum Distillery (15 minutes south). Walk the historic distillery, taste aged rums at the bar, and pick up a bottle or two from the shop. Return to Frederiksted for a stroll through the colourful waterfront, Fort Frederik and the charming backstreets. Your chef serves lunch on the aft deck, then an afternoon swim off the west coast’s sandy beaches.
Day 4: Estate Whim, Sandy Point and Return to Christiansted
Morning ashore at Estate Whim Museum – the oldest sugar plantation in the USVI, with a restored great house, sugar mill, cookhouse and gardens that bring the island’s plantation history to life. Continue by road or yacht to the south coast, passing Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge (the filming location for The Shawshank Redemption’s final scene – the longest beach on the USVI, a nesting ground for leatherback sea turtles, open to the public on limited days). Your chef serves a farewell brunch on the aft deck as the yacht departs the south coast and cruises east back to Christiansted (roughly 1.5 hours). Arrive in the harbour by late afternoon, deeply tanned and thoroughly charmed by St Croix’s quieter, more authentic side.
Guests looking for a longer voyage can combine the 3-day north-coast route (Buck Island, Salt River, Cane Bay) with the 4-day full island circuit (Green Cay, Frederiksted, Cruzan Rum, Estate Whim, Sandy Point) for a comprehensive 7-day St Croix charter. The two itineraries cover different ground, so there is no overlap – and a full week on St Croix still leaves corners of the island unexplored for the next visit.
