Belize Itineraries: Day Charters and Multi-Day Routes
Belize’s barrier reef, 450-plus cayes and three offshore atolls create a cruising ground where world-class diving, pristine snorkelling and private-island beaches are never more than a few hours apart. The itineraries below are designed to be combined: a guest booking the 3-day barrier-reef route and the 4-day atoll circuit can stitch them together into a comprehensive 7-day charter covering the reef, all three atolls and the Great Blue Hole without repeating a single stop. Every itinerary is fully customisable – your Boatcrowd charter specialist and onboard captain will tailor stops, pacing and activities to your group’s interests and the conditions on the day.
Day Charter Routes
Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley
Depart your anchorage off Ambergris Caye mid-morning and cruise four miles south to Hol Chan Marine Reserve – a 15-minute run. Spend the morning snorkelling the channel cut through the barrier reef, where nurse sharks rest on the sandy bottom, southern stingrays glide past at arm’s length, sea turtles cruise the shallows, and over 160 species of tropical fish dart among the coral heads. Move to Shark Ray Alley for close encounters with stingrays measuring up to four feet across. Your chef serves lunch on the aft deck. In the afternoon, cruise to Caye Caulker for a waterfront drink and a stroll through this famously laid-back island before returning to Ambergris Caye.
Silk Cayes and the Southern Reef
Depart Placencia mid-morning and cruise east to the Silk Cayes – three tiny islands perched on the barrier reef, roughly 22 nautical miles offshore. Anchor in turquoise shallows and spend the morning snorkelling the surrounding reef – healthy coral, sea turtles, spotted eagle rays and colourful clouds of tropical fish in visibility that often exceeds 25 metres. Your crew sets up a beach barbecue on one of the cayes – white sand, coconut palms and no other soul in sight. Spend the afternoon paddleboarding, swimming and exploring by tender. Return to Placencia in the golden late-afternoon light.
Turneffe Atoll Day Dive
Cruise east from Belize City or Ambergris Caye to Turneffe Atoll – 17 nautical miles, roughly 90 minutes. Spend the day on two or three dives across the atoll’s 70-plus sites: wall dives on the eastern side, where the reef drops into the blue; channel dives through cuts alive with grouper, jacks and eagle rays; and shallow coral gardens on the western, sheltered side. Your chef serves lunch at anchor between dives. Return to the mainland by late afternoon with one of the finest atoll-diving days in the Caribbean behind you.
Multi-Day Itineraries
3-Day Belize Yacht Charter Itinerary: Barrier Reef and the Cayes
Day 1: Ambergris Caye, Hol Chan and Caye Caulker
Board your yacht off San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, by mid-morning. After a welcome briefing and champagne toast, cruise south to Hol Chan Marine Reserve for a morning of world-class snorkelling – nurse sharks, stingrays, turtles and 160-plus fish species in a protected channel just metres below the surface. Move to Shark Ray Alley for close encounters with the rays. Your chef serves lunch on the aft deck. In the afternoon, cruise to Caye Caulker for a stroll through this colourful, barefoot island – cold drinks at a waterfront bar, local snacks and the island’s famously relaxed atmosphere. Overnight at anchor off Caye Caulker.
Day 2: Southern Cayes and Barrier Reef
Depart early and cruise south along the barrier reef, stopping at one of the smaller, uninhabited cayes for a morning snorkel and beach time – white sand, calm water and no other visitors. Continue south towards Placencia, stopping at South Water Caye – a tiny island on the edge of the barrier reef with outstanding snorkelling on both the lagoon and ocean sides. Your chef prepares lunch on the aft deck. In the afternoon, explore the mangrove channels by tender, keeping an eye out for manatees, herons and the occasional crocodile. Overnight at anchor off Placencia.
Day 3: Placencia, Silk Cayes and Farewell
Rise early for a morning cruise to the Silk Cayes – 22 nautical miles east of Placencia. Spend the morning on these pristine reef islands: snorkelling, swimming and a crew-prepared beach barbecue on the sand. If your charter coincides with the whale-shark season (March–June, full-moon period), your captain can divert to Gladden Spit for an encounter with the giants. Return to Placencia by mid-afternoon – time for a final stroll along the sandy main street, a cold Belikin beer at a beachfront bar, and a farewell dinner of conch fritters and fresh catch at one of Placencia’s waterfront restaurants.
4-Day Belize Yacht Charter Itinerary: The Atolls and the Great Blue Hole
Day 1: Turneffe Atoll – Wall Dives and Coral Gardens
Depart Belize City or Ambergris Caye mid-morning and cruise east to Turneffe Atoll – 17 nautical miles, roughly 90 minutes. Pick up a mooring on the atoll’s western side and spend the afternoon on two dives: a wall dive on the eastern reef, where the drop-off is alive with sponges, corals, eagle rays and schools of jacks, and a shallower coral-garden dive among the patch reefs on the western, sheltered lagoon side. Your chef serves dinner aboard as the atoll’s low-lying islands catch the last of the sunset light.
Day 2: Lighthouse Reef and the Great Blue Hole
Depart early and cruise east to Lighthouse Reef – roughly 26 nautical miles from Turneffe, about two hours. The morning dive is the Great Blue Hole itself: descend past massive stalactites at 40 metres, float in the cathedral-like stillness of a formation older than human civilisation, and surface with a story you’ll tell for the rest of your life. After lunch on the aft deck, moor at Half Moon Caye for the afternoon – the wall dive here is considered the finest in Belize, a sheer drop adorned with coral spurs, sponge gardens and a parade of eagle rays. Tender ashore to walk the caye and observe the nesting colony of red-footed boobies. Overnight at anchor off Lighthouse Reef.
Day 3: Glover’s Reef – Pristine Lagoon and Patch Reefs
Cruise south-west to Glover’s Reef – roughly 35 nautical miles from Lighthouse Reef, about two and a half hours. This most remote atoll sits at the edge of the continental shelf, and its near-unbroken ring of reef encloses a shallow lagoon with over 700 patch reefs. The diving and snorkelling here are outstanding: pristine coral, minimal boat traffic and a marine-research-station ethos that has kept the reef in exceptional condition. Spend the afternoon alternating between dives and snorkels across the lagoon. Dinner aboard as the stars appear – this far from the mainland, the Milky Way is bright enough to read by.
Day 4: Return via the Barrier Reef
Depart Glover’s Reef mid-morning and cruise west towards the mainland, stopping at a quiet barrier-reef caye for a final snorkel and beach picnic. Your chef prepares a farewell lunch on the aft deck as the yacht cruises north. Arrive at Placencia or Belize City by mid-afternoon – time for a last swim, a cold drink, and reflections on a voyage that has covered all three of Belize’s atolls, the Great Blue Hole, and some of the finest reef diving in the Caribbean. Guests looking for a longer voyage can combine this 4-day atoll circuit with the 3-day barrier-reef route for a 7-day charter without repeating a single stop.
5-Day Belize Yacht Charter Itinerary: The Complete Reef and Atolls
Day 1: Ambergris Caye and Hol Chan
Board your yacht off San Pedro and spend the day on the northern barrier reef. Morning at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley – nurse sharks, stingrays and 160-plus fish species. Afternoon cruise to Caye Caulker for the island’s laid-back charm. Overnight at anchor with the barrier reef stretching south before you.
Day 2: Turneffe Atoll
Cruise east to Turneffe and spend the day exploring the atoll’s 70-plus dive sites. Wall dives on the eastern reef, patch-reef snorkels in the western lagoon, and a long lunch at anchor in the sheltered interior. The variety of marine life – grouper, jacks, eagle rays, turtles, the occasional manatee – is exceptional for a single day. Overnight at anchor on Turneffe.
Day 3: Lighthouse Reef and the Great Blue Hole
The day you’ve been waiting for. Morning dive into the Great Blue Hole – stalactites, reef sharks and a stillness that defies description. Afternoon on Half Moon Caye Wall – the finest wall dive in Belize. Tender ashore to see the red-footed booby colony. Overnight at Lighthouse Reef under a sky of stars.
Day 4: Glover’s Reef
Cruise south to the most remote atoll and spend the day snorkelling and diving the 700-plus patch reefs in the lagoon. The reef here is in pristine condition, the water crystal-clear, and other visitors are rare. Your chef prepares dinner on the aft deck as the sun sets over the barrier reef to the west.
Day 5: Southern Reef, Silk Cayes and Placencia
Cruise west to the Silk Cayes for a morning beach barbecue and a final snorkel on the outer barrier reef. If timing and conditions allow, divert to Gladden Spit for a whale-shark encounter. Continue to Placencia by mid-afternoon for a farewell dinner ashore – conch fritters, fresh catch and a Belikin beer to toast five days covering every major reef and atoll system in Belize. A voyage that begins at the barrier reef, touches all three atolls, and finishes on the finest caye beaches in the Caribbean – without repeating a single stop.
